Professor Lovat convenes the annual Barrett’s Oesophagus research symposium at UCL on behalf of the Heartburn Cancer UK charity. Professor Lovat is on the scientific advisory committee to the UK BE Foundation and is Topic Lead for BE in the National Electronic Library for Health. He is a specialist advisor to NICE

Oesophageal adenocarcinoma is the fifth commonest cause of cancer death in the UK and arises almost exclusively from areas of Barrett’s oesophagus (BE). The research focuses on development of optical diagnostic and therapeutic tools for managing pre-cancerous changes in Barrett’s oesophagus. More recently, the work is expanding into other detection methods for biomarkers of malignant progression of BE, most notably image cytometry to detect DNA content abnormalities.
