The Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering is inviting applications for two studentships in the area of Robotic Surgery.

The applicant will be part of the vibrant Translational Imaging Group of the Centre for Medical Image Computing the Institute of Ophthalmology, and the EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre in Medical Imaging. The students will be co-supervised by Dr. Christos Bergeles, and Prof. Lyndon da Cruz.

Several millions of people worldwide suffer from sight loss. The outcomes of both old and new interventions can benefit from intraoperative assistance in the form of robotics and image guidance. The aim of our project is to improve surgical outcomes for ophthalmologic surgical procedures that require vast amounts of dexterity by introducing new robotic systems that make use of novel image information. The aim of the PhD will be to develop technology in the area microsurgical robotics.

Two PhD students are sought:

(1) A candidate with background on robotics and computer science, that will conduct research on computational robot design or computer vision (depending on preference).

(2) A candidate with background on microelectronics or biomedical engineering that will conduct research on robot sensor fabrication and characterisation.

Person Specification
Applicants are expected to have a first degree in electronic, biomedical, computer science or computer engineering or relevant physical sciences based subject passed at 2:1 level (UK system or equivalent) or above.

Funding will be for 4 years, with a tax free stipend of £16,296 per year and UK/EU-level university fees (£4,728). Overseas students may apply if they have other means to fund the additional fees
