Molecular Imaging in the Clinic - Status, Opportunities & Issues
Nuclear Medicine is today the only clinical application for molecular imaging and one of the few tools for personalized medicine that have transitioned from translational research into clinical practice. During its seventy-year history it has experienced significant advancements, as most other medical technologies but its reliance on administered radioactively-tagged tracers has been the reason of its success but at the same time its major roadblock for growth.
This discussion will attempt to highlight major developments and trends of the different parameters that contribute to its clinical as well as commercial success, such as imaging technologies, novel radiopharmaceuticals and their production technology. The focus will be from the industry’s perspective and particularly on how these changes have contributed to the current growth rate, highlighting growth factors and major adoption barriers.
Antonis studied biomedical instrumentation engineering, medical physics and business management, in Greece and the United Kingdom. After receiving his PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research (University of London) in 2004 he held R&D, technical marketing and research partnerships management positions in GE Healthcare and Philips.
His involvement with the European trade association of Nuclear Medicine (AIPES) started in 2008, representing the organisation in numerous activities. Since May 2016 is an elected member of the management board and Vice-President of the Association. Amongst his various roles is the organisation of the annual AIPES Symposium. He also acts as a reviewer for several national and international research organisations and scientific journals and he is often invited speaker in several academic departments and organisations in the UK.
