Expanding Diversity in STEM Symposium

The Expanding Diversity in STEM Symposium was a thoroughly engaging event exploring opportunities to engage with diverse and minority audiences organised by CDT student, Yolanda Ohene.

The event was aimed at BAME postgraduate researchers from STEM backgrounds and covered topics ranging from providing advice on how to navigate an academic career to discovering tactics in engaging the public in science, as well as reaching diverse audiences and the representation of BAME researchers.

The event was successfully organised by Yolanda Ohene who said, “The Expanding Diversity in STEM event came together from noticing of the stark lack of science researchers from an ethnic minority background, particularly in the most senior positions. I thought it would be a great idea to help BAME PhD students, by getting together diverse panel of academics to discuss their top tips for navigating research careers and building on communication and engagement skills in afternoon workshops.”

The symposium was well attended by a number of PHD students from a variety of backgrounds where they had the opportunity to question the panel of guest speakers, including; Ijeoma Uchegbu (Professor, UCL School of Pharmacy) and Nazira Karodia (Dean, Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Wolverhampton) who each discussed their unique pathways to professorship and beyond.

The panel emphasised the importance of broadening perceptions and opening opportunities for younger generations to ensure future equality and diversity within science. One of the main messages, particularly stressed by Professor Uchegbu, was that there was a real need to spend more time in primary schools and make children aware of the possibilities of a scientific career from an early age.
